Timberlink Timber Treatment

C24 timber is high pressure treated green by Timberlink to Use Class 2 to enhance resistance against rot and insect attack.

  • What is C24 Timber?

C24 timber is high strength structural coniferous timber, usually Spruce or Pine.  C24 is the shorthand for the defined bending strength of that strength class: C24 for 24 N/mm₂ and C16 for 16 N/mm₂ - the higher numbered grade is the better quality.  C24 wood complies with EN14081-2 and, being graded to a higher standard than C16 timber, is usually specified to meet tighter Building Regulations requirements, especially to handle higher loads and wider spans.

C24 timber is more expensive than C16 as it is imported, slower grown with both narrower growth rings and hence a tighter grain which leads to greater density, durability and strength. In general terms C24 timbers will have fewer knots ie less strength-reducing features, which makes C24 timber visually more appealing than most C16 timbers and allows them to achieve the higher performance required by strength class C24.

Timberlink sells both C24 timber and C16 timber so you can choose the right grade of timber without the need to overspecify or overspend. At Timberlink, we supply a wide range of Treated Timber products, including Treated Kiln-Dried Regularised C24 Timber, Treated Sawn Timber (including longer lengths), and C24-grade Timber suitable for farm buildings, such as joists, purlins, and sheeting rails.

  • What C24 Timber does Timberlink stock?

    Timberlink carries a vast range of C24 Timber sizes/sections in depths of 47, 75 and 100mm (2", 3"and 4"), widths from 75 to 300mm (3" to 12") and lengths from 1.8m (6' approx) up to 7.315 m (24').

Timberlink stocks dry graded (ie Kiln dried) C24 in 47mm depth in widths 5,100,125,150,175,200,225 and 250mm plus 75mm in 150,200 and 225mm from Scandinavia that has been planed and regularised so the dimensions are the same with rounded or eased edges. The finished size is usually 3mm less in depth and 5mm less in width.

Timberlink stocks 75 and 100 mm deep C24 from Belgium, Germany and France that is usually spruce that is rough sawn and has been wet graded (ie the timber has not been kiln dried) in widths from 125 ,150,175,200,225,250 and 300mm.  When sawn in practice the timber tends to be 3mm less in depth and width. This timber is used for farm buildings and larger projects where heavy beams are required that does not need a regularised or planed finish.

  • What is C24 Timber used for?

Internally, C24 nowadays is normally sold treated to Use Class 2  (to protect against insect attack, rot and decay) and is commonly used internally for floor joists, roof purlins, trusses, wall plates or heavy duty framing. Wet graded treated C24 is extensively used for purlins and beams in farm buildings and is usually sold in imperial lengths to enable farmers to match extension bay widths to existing sheds.

Externally, C24 can be used for decking joists but as it is in ground contact then only redwood C24 that has been treated to Use Class 4 should be specified. Whitewood C24 timber due to its narrow growth rings and planed finish does not treat as well as rough sawn or redwood timber and should only be used in certain external uses such as fencing rails where a splinter free finish is required and where a lifespan less than 15 years is acceptable.
